Time to grade!
The 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft has come to a close, and the San Francisco 49ers made no changes to their roster. Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal (3rd round) and Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander (6th round) were selected by the New York Giants and Washington, respectively. This is the first time since 2010 that multiple players have been selected in the supplemental draft.
This year’s supplemental draft included Beal, Alexander, Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu, and Grand Valley State running back Marty Carter. Since Bryant, Ugwoegbu, and Carter were not selected, they are now free agents and eligible to sign with any team. NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero is reporting the New York Jets are expected to sign Bryant.
If the 49ers wanted to select a player, they would have had to sacrifice a 2019 pick. The Giants are sacrificing their third round pick next year, while Washington is sacrificing a sixth round pick. The 49ers could have used more safety depth with someone like Bryant, but they are comfortable moving forward with their current young talent. Adrian Colbert and Jaquiski Tartt are slotted in as their starting safeties. Chanceller James, D.J. Reed, Don Jones, Marcell Harris, and others will compete for the one or two spots behind Colbert and Tartt.
Draft grades hold little value, and supplemental draft grades even less, but why not see what people think? I’ll go with like a B. I would have liked to see them add some safety depth, so I won’t give them an A. But clearly they’re happy with what they’ve got for now, so I think a B works for me. I think that’s eminently reasonable!
