Another kicker?

The San Francisco 49ers have franchise tagged kicker Robbie Gould. That hasn’t stopped them from showing interest in other kickers, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. From Maiocco’s article:

Gould has not signed his franchise tender, and Gostkowski remains unsigned as a free agent. The 49ers and Gould appear to be at odds over the team’s decision to lock him up for this season on the franchise tag. Gould has made it clear he wanted to be able to explore his options as a free agent, especially the possibility of a return to Chicago, where he played his first 11 NFL seasons. But the 49ers restricted Gould’s ability to choose where he will kick in 2019 with the one-year, $4.971 million tag. Gould originally signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the 49ers on the first day of free agency in 2017.

With Gould not signing his franchise tag, the team could—and likely would—rescind it if they were to strike a deal with Gostkowski to take his place. Last month, John Lynch said there was a possibility of working out a long-term deal with Gould.

There’s been plenty of “he said she said.” If the 49ers sign Gostkowski, the 49ers surely will strip the franchise tender from Gould, since it becomes fully guaranteed the moment that it’s accepted. Maybe the team is truly interested in Gostkowski. Maybe the team is bluffing. Time will tell. You have to imagine something is up with the Gould situation, though.
