The 49ers on Friday announced the signing of former Atlanta Falcons and AAF offensive tackle Daniel Brunskill.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported Thursday that Brunskill was in Santa Clara for a workout.

The 49ers’ depth along the offensive line isn’t tremendous, and Brunskill is another body to add to the battle for a roster spot as the swing tackle. Shon Coleman, who the 49ers added via trade with the Browns prior to the start of last season, is the only real contender for the job with the start of the offseason program looming.

Brunskill hasn’t taken an NFL snap yet after signing with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent two years on their practice squad before latching on with the San Diego Fleet in the AAF.

Typically a two-year practice squad dweller wouldn’t garner much interest, but Brunskill is 25 and still relatively early in his development as a tackle. He was a Pro Football Focus honorable mention All-American at tight end for San Diego State before transitioning to tackle for his senior season. His athleticism should make him an intriguing player along the offensive line, especially if he can continue improving his technique and footwork.

Brunskill will be a long shot to land on the 53-man roster, but his skill set and background make him worth keeping an eye on.
