The 49ers sent shockwaves through the NFL on Friday when they announced the signing of kicker Jonathan Brown.

Okay, maybe not shockwaves. Not even really a ripple.

Brown will work as an extra kicker in training camp for San Francisco to provide some preseason relief for 36-year-old kicker Robbie Gould. The 49ers placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Gould, which means they’d receive two first-round picks if he signed elsewhere. It’s safe to assume he’ll be back in red and gold next season.

Brown entered the NFL in 2016 with the Bengals as an undrafted free agent from Louisville. He was cut at the end of the 2016 offseason, then spent time on the Bengals’ practice squad late in 2017 before being cut after the 2018 preseason. He hit six-of-six field goal tries during his 2018 exhibition games.

The former soccer player began his career at Kentucky playing for their soccer team. He eventually transferred to Louisville where he took up football.

We’ll likely see Brown quite a bit in the preseason, but Gould will be San Francisco’s kicker next year barring anything strange in free agency.
