The 49ers look like they’ll have the same starting offensive line for a second straight season.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed right guard Mike Person to a three-year extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal is reportedly worth $9 million with $3 million guaranteed. Person played this past season on a one-year contract and was due to hit free agency on March 13th.
We’ll have to wait for more contract details, but this likely means Person is the guy at right guard this fall. Joshua Garnett competed for the role last year, but a training camp injury cut short that opportunity. It’s all but assured they will not pick up Joshua Garnett’s fifth year option. Garnett is signed through 2019, but there is a decent chance he does not even make the roster this fall if the 49ers think Erik Magnuson or another addition can handle utility work.
The 49ers offensive line had its ups and downs, and Person’s extension means we will probably get to see the starting line together for a second straight season. Last season, the 49ers started the same five offensive linemen for 15 of 16 games. Erik Magnuson started in place of Weston Richburg at Arizona, but otherwise everything was the same all season. We saw some individual injuries during the season, but none that otherwise resulted in a missed start. Hopefully the continuity makes for an improved line this fall.
