Kyle Shanahan going after his guy

It appears the team did want to bring in a running back. Per Adam Schefter & Ian Rapoport, the 49ers agreed to terms with RB Tevin Coleman on a 2-year deal worth a max value of $10M. Kyle Shanahan gets his guy. He has always spoke highly of Coleman, who is a big play threat every time he touches the ball.

Shanahan has always loved the idea of using multiple backs on the field at the same time. Here’s a quote of him on Coleman and just that back in 2017:

“Tevin has a lot of talent as you can see,” offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said.

He plans to continue to play both running backs together at times.

“You always have to look at what personnel the defense is going to (use),” Shanahan said. “How they are going to react to it. What fronts are they going to use when you have two running backs in the game.vWhether if they treat your second running back as a fullback or a receiver. It has to do with all of the different looks that you get. It’s something that we sprinkled in a bunch last year in a number of games. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense, but it really has to do with what you’re going against.”

Under Shanahan, Coleman averaged over 12 yards a catch. Without him, he averaged eight. If there’s one person that knows how to use him, it’s the head coach of the 49ers. Coleman was no slouch running the ball last year, either. He averaged 4.8 yards per play. The team gets more athletic on offense today.
