The 49ers finally touched on their need at wide receiver. They announced the signing of former Eagles and Bills wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

Matthews, 26, is entering his sixth season in the NFL. He entered the league with the Eagles as a second-round pick out of Vanderbilt. He played in Philadelphia for three seasons before being traded to Buffalo for the 2017 campaign. He re-signed with the Eagles for 2018.

While his production has fallen off significantly the last two seasons, he was a very good receiver through his first three years. Matthews posted 67 catches as a rookie with 872 yards and eight touchdowns. He followed that up with 85 catches, 997 yards and eight touchdowns in Year 2. His third year was less productive with 804 yards and three touchdowns on 73 receptions.

2017 and 2018 were less kind to the newest 49ers receiver. He had just 45 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns combined.

Now he’ll have an opportunity to regain his early form in an offense where he’ll likely serve as one of the top wide receivers. His 6-3, 215-pound frame gives him size unique to the 49ers’ receiving corps. He figures to take Pierre Garçon’s place at the top of the depth chart.
