The 49ers are adding some depth to their secondary by signing former Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Verrett was a 2014 first-round pick of the Chargers, but injuries limited him to just 25 games in five years. He missed all of 2018 after tearing an Achilles in training camp.

The 27-year-old was a Pro Bowler in his lone full season in 2015.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was in a press conference to introduce new defensive lineman Dee Ford and linebacker Kwon Alexander when the news of the signing came down. He said he couldn’t confirm the signing yet.

Verrett figures to add competition at cornerback – a position where the 49ers struggled to get production last season. They only had two interceptions and neither of them were by corners. Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore will also compete for a starting job across from Richard Sherman.
