The 49ers’ late-season surge led by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo knocked San Francisco down the draft board after beginning the season 0-9. Winning six of the final seven games put the 49ers in line for pick No. 9 or 10, pending the results of a coin flip with the Oakland Raiders, who finished with an identical record and strength of schedule. General manager John Lynch will have some $110-million in cap space and nine draft picks to continue bolstering the roster.

Our friends at Draft Wire this week published their latest four-round mock NFL draft predicting the first five picks for the 49ers. Let’s take a look and break down how the choices would fit.

Round 1 – Pick 9 : Harold Landry, EDGE, Boston College

The 49ers’ defensive front is stacked with first-round picks in Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas, but none of those players have the primary responsibility of rushing the passer. Rookie defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has struggled to generate pressure on opposing offenses without a true threat coming off the edge.

The 49ers rank 26th in the NFL with 30 sacks on the season. They need a dominant pass rusher to compliment their investments along the interior, making Landry a logical pick for Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling:

I think the 49ers would love to see (Quenton) Nelson fall to them here, but if he’s off the board, Landry would hardly be a disappointing consolation prize. A versatile, explosive rusher who led the FBS in sacks two years ago, Landry is a perfect fit for what the 49ers need on the edge.

In three seasons, Landry (6-3, 250) racked up 158 tackles, 48 for loss and 25 sacks for Boston College. He’s the type of pure speed rusher the 49ers have lacked and is comparable to Vic Beasley, the Falcons’ star rusher whom Shanahan is familiar with after his time in Atlanta. Edge defenders are among the NFL’s most valuable players, making Landry a worthy investment early in the first round.
