Let’s take a look at some of the details of Coleman’s contract
The 49ers added RB Tevin Coleman on Wednesday for a little insurance. It may have been more than that. Coleman is a guy that can do some serious damage in the passing game. On Thursday some of the contract details started to emerge. We don’t have the details on what the annual salaries or bonuses are.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the contract for Coleman is 2 years, $8.5 million. He gets $3.6M in Year 1. No signing bonus, so clean break if they cut him before a $2M rolling guarantee kicks in April 1, 2020. Max $10.6M with incentives.
The big takeaway here is that there is no long-term commitment and that it’s just not a lot of money. To be able to get around 1,000 yards from scrimmage for Coleman, which is what he’s been around he’s entire career, would more than validate this deal. Even if he puts up a stinker in 2019, they can release him and move on. No harm no foul.
I’ve seen the “you could’ve used that couple million for Earl Thomas”, or insert free agent. There’s just no way of knowing how close the 49ers were in these deals. We’ve seen plenty of reports where a player turned down more money. Sometimes it’s just the fit or the culture. Bradley Roby turned down a significantly bigger contract from the Steelers to play with the Texans. So that $1 million difference the 49ers offer is moot.
