The top members of the 49ers’ front office didn’t attend Kentucky’s Pro Day, but that’s not stopping them from getting to know Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen. He told Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports that he’ll be visiting with the 49ers prior to the draft.

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise. General manager John Lynch and vice president of player personnel Adam Peters skipping the Pro Day was never a particularly clear signal of interest, or lack thereof.

Allen is one of the draft’s top edge rushers. He might not fit perfectly in the 49ers’ scheme, but they’re not going to determine what he can and can’t do until they meet with him.

Skipping on a visit with a player who recorded 17 sacks in 13 games his senior year isn’t something San Francisco can afford to do. Perhaps they determine Allen isn’t the player they’re looking for, but ensuring they turn over all stones in that search is imperative.
