The 49ers on Thursday added more depth to their secondary. Very shortly after reporting cornerback Jason Verrett was signing with San Francisco, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported safety Antone Exum Jr. would be back with the 49ers for the 2019 season.

Exum, 28, is a quality depth signing for the 49ers. He spent last season with the club and played in 15 games with seven starts at both safety spots. He also had one of San Francisco’s two interceptions on the season.

With so many question marks in the back end of their defense, a player like Exum gives them versatility that stabilizes their depth chart. His experience in the defense will help any new players who are brought in, and his ability to play multiple spots gives the team options in case of injury. It also gives them added flexibility when constructing their roster.
