The 49ers will open the 2021 regular season in the Motor City and get to face a former division-mate.
The NFL schedule release comes at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, but the broadcast networks announced the full Week 1 slate during their morning shows on Wednesday. FOX announced that the San Francisco 49ers will be on the road facing the Detroit Lions. The game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. PT kickoff.
This matchup gives the 49ers a chance to get off to a strong start right out of the gate. Detroit’s 2021 win total is installed at 5 at DraftKings Sportsbook. They have the longest odds to win the division at +2000 as they move into a rebuilding process.
Detroit’s two biggest moves this offseason involved the two most important aspects of the team. First, the team hired former NFL tight end and tight ends coach Dan Campbell to take over as head coach. Then, the team unloaded quarterback Matthew Stafford. They dealt him to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff, a third round pick this past draft and first round picks in the 2022 and 2023 drafts. Goff offers them a short-term starting option, but he’s a downgrade from Stafford.
The team added offensive tackle Penei Sewell in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and their biggest free agency addition was probably running back Jamaal Williams. The team also acquired defensive tackle Michael Brockers via trade. This is a team building for the future.
