The San Francisco 49ers finish off Week 6 with a primetime appearance on Monday Night Football, hosting the Washington Commanders. Sunday games created a massive opportunity for the 49ers when the Los Angeles Rams lost to the Arizona Cardinals. The Seattle Seahawks lost to the Denver Broncos on Thursday; if the 49ers beat the Commanders, they’d have a three-game (and then some if you count tiebreakers) lead in the NFC West. ESPN will air this game on Monday Night Football, with Joe Buck on play-by-play and Troy Aikman on color.

While the 49ers have been favored by over a touchdown through the week, this game is no gimme. The 49ers have exceeded expectations to start the season and now have a target on their backs for other teams to get right. Enter the Commanders. This could have the makings of a trap game, but if the 49ers take care of business, they can go to 6-0.

It won’t be easy. While some players like fullback Kyle Juszczyk are returning early, it will be another week without Nick Bosa. Fortunately, the offense has continued to hum and be efficient despite the injury issues. Quarterback Brock Purdy just needs five pass attempts tonight to make the all-time list, and it’s a safe bet he’ll enter that list with the highest career passer rating in NFL history.

The 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks in a very violent game a week ago. Credit for the win can go to Purdy putting together an impressive second-to-last offensive drive where he scored a touchdown despite getting intentional grounding calls and other lame penalties that would stunt other offenses.

The Commanders just had a tie. A tie with the New York Giants. If you remember the year the 49ers tied with the then-St. Louis Rams, you know what that feeling is like. The thing is, this was a tie the Commanders could have easily avoided. The tie resulted from horrible clock management by the Commanders, who, out of timeouts, ran it on second down and failed to get the spike off before the clock ticked down to zero. Considering they were on the 25-yard line, the field goal wouldn’t have been difficult. The tie has some looking at head coach Dan Quinn and wondering whether the Commanders may need to look elsewhere at season’s end. Had the Commanders missed the field goal, that might have been one thing, but failing to stop the clock to win the game was a massive mistake.

The NFC East has been underachieving so far this year, which means the 1-3-1 Commanders are still in the thick of it, giving them some motivation against the 49ers.

The 49ers will be without Wide receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring), defensive end Nick Bosa (calf), safety Marques Sigle (ankle), and linebacker Garret Wallow (hamstring). Wide receiver Mike Evans (rib, Achilles),
defensive tackle Gracen Halton (quad), safety Siran Neal (neck), cornerback Upton Stout (shoulder), wide receiver Christian Kirk (calf), and defensive end Mykel Williams (knee) are questionable.

Kyle Shanahan said there’s a chance Kirk could be activated for his first game of the season. The 49ers will get Kyle Juszczyk back early after what looked like a more severe knee injury than it actually was. Defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. will also be returning to the team.

The Commanders will be without running back Jacory Croskey-Meritt (groin), linebacker Javontae Jean-Baptiste (pec), defensive end Charles Omenihu (groin/ankle), and quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee).
