The 49ers on Monday announced they waived seven players following the NFL draft.

They placed on waivers WR Steven Dunbar Jr., WR Jordan Smallwood, DB Godwin Igwebuike, CB Tarvarus McFadden, S Terrell Williams Jr., LB James Onwualu and P Justin Vogel.

San Francisco made eight picks in the draft and brought in a slew of undrafted free agents for rookie tryouts.

Dunbar and Smallwood were added late last season, and Dunbar was promoted from the practice squad for the final game. Smallwood was signed to the practice squad with two weeks remaining in the season.  They were longshots to make the roster to begin with, but the receivers room was going to be crowded with two new draft picks, Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd.

Igwebuike and Onwualu were both added the same week. Reuben Foster was released and Jimmie Ward was injured, leading to the additional safety and linebacker on the roster.

Williams was a rookie last season who was waived with an injury settlement during the preseason. McFadden was another undrafted rookie who was let go as part of the final roster cuts. He spent time with the Colts’ practice squad before the 49ers scooped him back up following his release from Indianapolis.

Vogel’s days were numbered as soon as the 49ers spent a fourth-round pick on punter Mitch Wishnowsky. There wasn’t going to be a competition, so Vogel was only going to occupy a roster spot.

Expect plenty more roster tweaking throughout the offseason as the 49ers hone their roster to maximize their productivity in preseason activities and training camp.
