Waege spent time on the practice squad last November

As the San Francisco 49ers are set to begin their rookie minicamp, the team announced they waived defensive lineman Spencer Waege.

The two-time FCS All-American originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL Draft. Waege signed with the 49ers in May 2023 before he was released at the end of August. Waege spent time on the Niners practice squad in 2023 when he signed in November, but that’s as close as he came to the active roster.

Waege faced a formidable challenge to make the roster as we approach minicamp. The competitive nature of the NFL was evident, with a staggering 13 defensive linemen ahead of him. And that’s without counting Evan Anderson, who the 49ers all but guaranteed a spot on the practice squad by giving him $280,000.

Here’s a look at the current defensive linemen on the roster who are projected over Waege:

Nick Bosa
Maliek Collins
Javon Hargrave
Leonard Floyd
Yetur Gross-Matos
Kevin Givens
Jordan Elliott
Drake Jackson
Robert Beal Jr.
Kalia Davis
T.Y. McGill
Austin Bryant
Alex Barrett
