The market is not as strong for Earl Thomas as many thought it would be

Welcome to Day three—and he’s still available.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports wrote about the 49ers free agency picture earlier this morning. There was an interesting note in the article about the team and Earl Thomas.

Would the 49ers want to add Earl Thomas? The answer is yes. But do the 49ers want to extend the kind of contract that he is seeking? The answer is no.

The 49ers are hanging around, as the market for Thomas does not appear to be as robust as expected.

That’s interesting. For a number of reasons. On ESPN’s NFL Live Tuesday, Chris Mortensen and the crew were saying that many people expected Thomas to be one of the first safeties signed. Age, injury, and his asking price are driving down his market. Maiocco essentially confirms that above.

Even with those factors, we figured Thomas is still going to get paid. For all we know, he still will. All it takes is one team. Maiocco mentioned that Dallas was the former Seahawks preferred destination, and even they were balking at what Thomas was asking. A late report came in Tuesday evening that Thomas was headed to Cleveland with all the other good players that signed there. None of the talking heads confirmed the report, though. If you look down this guys timeline, he hasn’t tweeted about sports in awhile. Safe to say it’s fake.

It’ll likely come down to whether the 49ers can give Thomas the guaranteed amount he is looking for. If they can, you wishes may come true. Our good pal James Brady has a source that told him, as of Tuesday evening, that a deal with Thomas and the Browns wasn’t close to being done. That’s not to say Thomas won’t end up there. The Thomas saga lives on for another day.
