Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers won’t exercise G Joshua Garnett’s fifth-year option, source said. No surprise, given injuries over the past couple years, though Garnett is healthy now and team brass talked up his potential again at the combine.
Time will tell if Garnett gets one last shot to prove himself. He only played 59 snaps in 2018. Mike Person, who was signed on a one-year deal the summer of 2018, played 999 snaps in 2018. The two will compete for a starting spot at right guard during camp. Garnett just can’t seem to stay healthy. It seems like the poor kid has terrible luck. Thumb surgery. Diagnosed with a dislocated toe. Hopefully he can stay healthy and fight for a spot after Garnett himself thought he played well during the preseason.
Around the league, there have been quite a few teams that are not exercising their first round picks fifth-year option, either. Tennessee’s Jack Conklin was a surprise.
