After playing only three plays against the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers ruled out star playmaker Deebo Samuel for the remainder of the game due to an illness.

Following the game, Samuel’s illness reacquired a trip to the hospital. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Samuel was hospitalized with a “pneumonia-like” illness. As of Monday, Samuel is still in the hospital.

Shanahan told reporters he was “unsure” if Samuel would be able to return for the 49ers’ Week 8 contest against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in Santa Clara.

With Brandon Aiyuk already ruled out for the season and Jauan Jennings also dealing with an injury, the 49ers could lean heavily on their rookie pass-catching duo of Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing. Veteran Chris Conley and second-year wide receiver Ronnie Bell could also see an increased role in the passing game against the Cowboys.
