Haven’t heard that name in awhile, huh?

ProFootballTalk reported early Friday morning that San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis is seeking reinstatement into the NFL. Davis was a first-round draft pick nine years ago. He then retired in 2015, came back in 2016, and retired roughly two months later. David provided a letter to the NFLPA on Thursday that said:

“On January 24, 2019, I read articles by 3 different sources pertaining to there being a significant decrease in concussions in the NFL, down by 29 percent in the 2018 season,” Davis writes. “Excited to see that the changes you and your staff have made to the rules, and the allowance of safer equipment to be worn has had a positive effect, I confided with my family and on January 28, 2019 I made the decision that I’d love to play in the NFL again.”

The reason Davis had delayed his reinstatement request was due to “prior use of CBD.” He also mentioned that he voluntarily entered the Drug Free Sports Drug Testing Program and hasn’t had any incidents like a missed or failed test in the past 92 days. That is a very specific number.

“I understand that playing in the NFL is a privilege and I have matured to a point in my life where I am prepared to represent myself, the NFL, and my family with the utmost class, respect and professionalism,” Davis writes. “I appreciate the strides the NFL is making to protect players and better the game for all. I also appreciate this opportunity and I do not take this for granted.”

Davis signed a contract extension back in 2013, so the 49ers still retain his rights. That contract would toll in retirement. This will be something to keep an eye on, especially considering Jed York and his stance on CBD or related marijuana use.

Davis is only 29-years old. There’s no telling what type of shape he’s in, or if Kyle Shanahan believes he’s a scheme fit. That will all work itself out. Once we hear any updates on this story, we will share them.
