49ers swing and miss on a talented CB

The 49ers are targeting CB’s in free agency. That we know. Per Mike Klis of 9News, the team offered a contract to former Bronco CB Bradley Roby.

We wrote about Roby this morning, actually. That one-year deal tells us that the team is looking for immediate competition opposite of Richard Sherman, as they should be.

You can’t fault John Lynch for this, though. Roby said he wanted one-year. Lynch gave him that. Roby chose another team. Let’s say Ahkello Witherspoon blossoms into the player he’s capable of in year three. Even if Roby improves on his 2018 campaign, it puts him in a similar situation a year from now. Roby won’t have to worry about competing against anybody in Houston. The Texans lost Kareem Jackson and released Kevin Johnson. The 49ers still have young depth with Witherspoon and Tavarius Moore that they are hoping to develop.

You wonder if “competition” or job security will scare away some free agents. Time will tell. For all we know, the team could be looking at the draft again now that Roby is off the board. Some other free agent names that are still out there: Jason Verrett, Jason McCourty, Ronald Darby, Pierre Desir, and Morris Claiborne, among others.
