If the 49ers were to trade down, he could be a target.

College underclassmen have until Monday to announce whether or not they will enter the 2019 NFL Draft, and Clemson edge rusher Clelin Ferrell as thrown his hat in the ring. Two days ago, he posted to Instagram that he is declaring for the draft.

Ferrell has been discussed as a potential edge rusher option, but he has been viewed as behind Josh Allen and Nick Bosa. The 49ers hold the No. 2 pick, which means they have an outside shot at Bosa, and if he goes first, could take Allen if they so chose. They need edge rusher help, but for a lot of people, this class is still viewed as Bosa and then everybody else.

If the 49ers are not fully sold on Allen and find a trading partner looking to move up to grab a quarterback, they could move down and still land a talented edge rusher. Ferrell was third in the ACC in total quarterback pressures, per Pro Football Focus. He finished the season with 13 sacks and 11 QB hits this year. He also had 20 tackles for a loss, and missed on only four of his 44 tackle attempts, per PFF.

The 49ers might decide to go in another direction in the first round, but there’s no doubt they’ll spend the next three and a half months breaking down a host of edge rusher options.
