It’s combine week! NFL prospects arrive in Indianapolis to go through the annual underwear Olympics, hoping to boost their stock before pro days get underway in March. Every NFL team will be present, getting a chance to observe the participants and meet with them. Teams are allowed to interview up to 60 players at the combine, for 15 minutes apiece.
The first groups of draft prospects report to Indianapolis today, Tuesday, February 26th. That group includes special teamers, running backs, and offensive linemen. Each day another group of players arrive and start the process while the group that arrived the previous day will move onto the next phase. Each group is in town for four days, and their schedule is as follows:
- Day 1: Arrival, registration, hospital pre-exam and X-rays, overflow testing, orientation, interviews.
- Day 2: Measurements/weigh-in, medical examinations, overflow testing, interviews
- Day 3: Psychological testing, NFLPA meeting, media, bench press, interviews
- Day 4: On-field workout (timing, stations, skill drills), departure
On Wednesday, February 27th, tight ends, quarterbacks, and wide receivers arrive. On Thursday, February 28th, defensive linemen and linebackers arrive. On Friday, March 1st, defensive backs arrive.
It’s safe to say that Thursday group is the big one for 49ers fans. That’s when Josh Allen, Nick Bosa, Clelin Ferrell, Quinnen Williams, and Ed Oliver all get to town. The 49ers will be looking for talent up and down the draft, but those are some of the big dogs.
The players are the stars of the week, but the presence of every team means we also get plenty of media availability. On Wednesday and Thursday, each team’s head coach and general manager will meet with the media. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak on Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. PT, and general manager John Lynch will speak on Thursday at 8:45 a.m.
The first day we see any players take the field for workouts is Friday, March 1st. NFL Network will broadcast from each of the four days of drills. They will provide a three-hour broadcast starting at 6 a.m. PT on Friday and Sunday, and at 7 a.m. PT on Saturday and Monday. They will re-broadcast throughout each day.
