Well, well, well. The San Francisco 49ers are reuniting with one of their former stars, re-signing former linebacker Dre Greenlaw to a one-year, $7.5 million deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Greenlaw, 28, left the 49ers for the Denver Broncos in free agency last offseason, despite seeing significant interest from the team to return. He signed a three-year, $31.5 million deal, but there was only $13.5 million in guaranteed money attached to the contract.
After playing in just eight games this year due to injuries, Greenlaw was designated as a post-June 1st release by the Broncos, hitting free agency once again, going into his age-29 season.
Well, the 49ers are bringing him back home on a one-year deal, giving him a chance to prove himself and boost his stock. In eight games last year (seven starts), Greenlaw had 43 tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups, a forced fumble, and an interception.
San Francisco saw their younger players step up at linebacker this year after Fred Warner went down with an ankle injury that ultimately cost him the rest of his season. Dee Winters and Tatum Bethune became the starting linebackers, and both players are slated to return in 2026.
With Greenlaw back, the 49ers will have a lot of talent in that linebacker room next year, with 2025 third-round pick Nick Martin also in the mix. It is a pretty significant investment, given the state of the room and Greenlaw’s recent injuries, but one with a higher reward as Greenlaw and Warner will reunite in 2026.
