Friday is a big day for the San Francisco 49ers talent evaluators. Defensive linemen and linebackers arrived on Thursday, and they begin the physical gauntlet on Friday. They are getting measured and examined on Friday, doing the bench press on Saturday, and going through on-field workouts on Sunday. Given the 49ers need at edge rusher, it’s safe to say they’ll be paying particular attention the next three days.
We’ve got results from some of the big names the 49ers might be looking at as we approach the 2019 NFL Draft. Yahoo! NFL reporter Charles Robinson has been tweeting out results from all the weigh-ins, and I’ve posted a table below with measurements from seven players listed as defensive ends or linebackers.
There is nothing overly shocking on this list. Brian Burns came into the Combine with the entire world knowing he had a small frame, and that showed up as he weighed in at 249 pounds while standing over 6’4. While some of these bigger pass rushers can bring a bit more power, Burns is a speed guy who can slip around the edge. It will be interesting to see what an NFL strength and nutrition program does to him.
Josh Allen measured in taller than Nick Bosa, with bigger arms and wingspan, but considerably smaller hands. That’s not really an issue necessarily, but it’s kind of fascinating. If you’re wondering, Bosa comes in an inch and a half shorter than his brother, three pounds lighter, and arm length 3/8 of an inch shorter.
This was meant to focus on edge rusher options, but the two defensive tackles potentially going in the top five are worth a note. Quinnen Williams came in at 6’3, 303 pounds, with 33 1⁄4 inch arms, 80 1⁄4 inch wingspan, a right hand at nine inches and a left hand at 9 5/8 inches. Ed Oliver came in at 6’1 7/8, 287 pounds, with 31 3⁄4 inch arms, 77 3/8 inch wingspan, and both hands at 9 1⁄4 inches.
