The 49ers are set to visit with free-agent cornerback Jason Verrett according to multiple reports.

Verrett is a 27-year-old, four-year veteran who’s played just 25 games since being selected No. 25 overall by the Chargers in the 2014 draft.

Injuries have derailed what looked to be a promising career for the cornerback. He made the Pro Bowl in his second season when he posted three interceptions and 12 pass breakups in 14 games. He played only six games his rookie season, then four in Year 3, one in Year 4, then missed all of last season.

This is the kind of signing the 49ers appear to be interested in making at cornerback though. They want to sign a short-term deal with a player to compete for a starting job with Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore. They also offered a one-year deal to former Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby, who chose to sign with Houston instead. A one-year ‘prove-it’ deal for Verrett would be ideal for both sides.

The physical Verrett is taking in Santa Clara will be vital. He tore his Achilles in training camp last season and missed the entire year. Before that a partially torn ACL caused him to miss most of 2016, then a re-aggravation of that injury caused him most of 2017. His rookie campaign in 2014 was cut short by a shoulder injury according to USA TODAY.
