Could the 49ers double down on wide receiver?

According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco 49ers worked out Fresno State wide receiver KeeSean Johnson. Johnson finished in the top 10 nationally with 95 receptions and 1,340 receiving yards (14.1 average), scoring eight times to garner second-team All-Mountain West accolades. Johnson also had over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017, too.

As far as his athletic testing went, Johnson failed to stand out. He ran a 4.6 40-yard dash. That’s not the end of the world if you show well in other areas. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Johnson had a 30” vertical jump, a 7.28 3-cone drill, and a 4.23 20-yard shuttle. Each of those are below average. Outside of the obvious outliers, you will have a tough time finding good football players that run over a 7.20 3-cone time. That’s just history.

Johnson has produced each year. He has that going for him. He also has shown he can play both inside and outside. What I’m interested in is will the 49ers double down on receiver? Johnson is projected to go after the third round. Everyone is expecting the 49ers to spend a pick on a wide receiver before that. Could Kyle Shanahan convince John Lynch to spend two picks? Or is this a situation where Johnson goes undrafted and the team signs him then?
