Tight end George Kittle has been the brightest spot in a disappointing year for the 49ers. There was no better encapsulation of that than his five-catch, 98-yard, one-touchdown performance Sunday in a 39-10 blowout loss to the Rams. San Francisco was dominated, but Kittle was dominant. He’s become a must-start in all forms of fantasy leagues given the team’s reliance on him and his big-play ability.

Kittle’s touchdown Sunday came late in the first half and put the score at 22-7 Los Angeles. His score needed a lengthy review as referees determined whether he made his reception with the ball across the goal line or just outside of it.

49ers fans, and Kittle fantasy owners, held their collective breath. It was called a touchdown. 49ers reporter Joe Fann relayed a hilarious story about a conversation the tight end had during the review:

Surely he’s just being funny, and the score in the 49ers game is obviously the most important thing to the second-year tight end. More often than not though, players will downplay their awareness of fantasy football, so it’s funny to hear Kittle discussing it on the field.

Kittle on that drive had three catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. That series alone is a nice day fantasy-wise.

He now leads the team in targets, receptions and receiving yards. He’s tied for second in touchdowns. Kittle will have more opportunities to rack up fantasy points in Week 8 when the 49ers visit Arizona to take on the 1-6 Cardinals.
