Day 2 of the legal tampering period saw a lot of action around the NFL. The 49ers finally got their pass rusher they have been searching for in Dee Ford. The 49ers completed a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for Ford; the Chiefs receiving the 49ers’ 2020 2nd round pick in exchange. The 49ers still needed to agree to a contract with Dee to complete the deal and they were able to do that soon after the trade was agreed to. The contract details are reported to be in the neighborhood of 5 years for around $90million, but it will be interesting to see the actual contract details.
Getting Dee Ford is an important get for the 49ers, but it shouldn’t change the 49ers’ plan to keep adding pass rush help. Pairing Dee Ford with DeForest Buckner and another pass rusher in the draft could set the 49ers defense up for many years. With the #2 pick, the 49ers could be in line for Nick Bosa, who is the top rated pass rusher in the draft. The defense had trouble rushing the quarterback last year so one addition will not be enough. But it is a good start.
The 49ers were also reportedly in trade talks for New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr, but the Cleveland Browns were the ones to complete the trade for Odell. According to reports, the New York Giants wanted the 49ers’ #2 pick in this year’s draft, but the 49ers did not want to part with it. If the 49ers do not hit with that #2 pick, it could be huge what if. Pairing Jimmy G with Odell and having Kyle Shanahan calling plays would have been amazing to watch.
