A daily compilation of 49ers news from around the net. Sunday, March 24th, 2019 edition.

Good morning folks, and a happy Sunday to you. Today, the NFL’s annual League Meeting begins in Phoenix, Arizona. Owners will meet over the coming days to discuss the state of the league, and, more importantly, mull over possible changes to the rules and regulations of the game. This year, the highly publicized item to be debated is an overhaul of the reply system & hierarchy.

Obviously, there’s no guarantee that anything will come of this, but the NFL have owners have seemingly been open to change, as a handful of rules have been amended over the past several years, including a number of changes to the kicking game. Football (and I’m not talkin’ about soccer here, yall) fans worldwide are generally able to put aside their differences and commiserate on very few things, but shoddy penalties/non-penalties in crucial game moments seems to be about as universal as it’s going to get. When the owners meet for the 2019 session, they’ll go over ways to possibly lessen the impact of blown referee intervention.

One such proposition revolves around the implementation of a sky judge, who instantly reviews all controversial plays, relieving the pressure on the replay ref in his little blue booth. The hope is that this would result in increased accuracy on calls, and begin to erase the prevalence of human error. Another idea is to make ALL plays reviewable. While this is ostensibly a winning proposition, it does, in my opinion, bring about some questions regarding the number of challenges available to coaches. Making all plays reviewable might blow open a Pandora’s box of undermining referee competency, and the implications of that could be catastrophic to the game – again, in my opinion. Catastrophic in the sense of more dadgum commercials, of course.

Here’s to hoping they come up with a equitable solution during this meeting! (“Your preferred wisecrack about massage parlors goes here” – but keep it clean, folks)
