A daily compilation of 49ers news from around the net. Thursday, March 28th, 2019 edition.

Good morning folks, and a happy Thursday to you. As the owner’s meeting concluded yesterday, we’ve got another short offseason deadzone approaching. Teams that have a new head coach are eligible to begin offseason workouts next Monday, but otherwise, teams will be required to wait until the 15th of April. While these workouts will not include drills or anything relating to football skills, April 15th remains an important date for 49ers fans, because it should provide an objective update on the health of many of our players, notably including Jimmy Garoppolo, Jerick McKinnon, and “red-shirt rookie” Kentavius Street.

Unfortunately, we’re two and a half weeks from that event, and all of the screaming headlines should be milked within a day, two days maximum. After that, the draft will begin on Thursday, April 25th. For those keeping count at home, we are officially 4 weeks away, as of today.

Having spoken with the media recently, Kyle Shanahan certainly drummed up some anticipation, at least as far as I’m concerned. He spoke about the challenges faced when playing against the Indianapolis Colts many seasons ago – all beginning with the ability to jump out to an early lead with Peyton Manning under center. Once a team was playing from behind against the Colts, wide-9 speed rusher Dwight Freeney’s only job was to then affect the quarterback. Allocating resources to stop Freeney often meant that Robert Mathis, on the other side, was then presented with desirable matchups. That pair is ranked 18th and 19th on the career sack list.

After having made comments comparing DeForest Buckner and the newly-acquired Dee Ford to Justin & Aldon Smith, Shanahan has made it fairly clear that adding another pass rushing defender is on his mind. He went on to mention that the 49ers were in a position to add a tremendous football player at #2, and if not, they had found spectacular value in a trade down. With Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat to meet with the 49ers this weekend, is seems that the team is doing their due diligence to find the right guy to place opposite of Ford for the upcoming season.
