The best part of the offseason is now upon the NFL. Free agents and teams can start negotiating on March 11th and can sign deals on March 14th. There are a lot of good players that are available via free agency and with the 49ers available cap space, they should be in on some of the most desired free agents available.

The top free agent target in most experts’ eyes for the 49ers is former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas. 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh runs Seattle’s defensive scheme so Earl’s transition should be smooth. He would also be paired with former teammate Richard Sherman who is likely doing the heavy recruiting for the 49ers. The team could also go after Giants safety Landon Collins. Collins, who is younger than the 29 year old Thomas, would be a piece that could be with the defense for many years. Safety is a position that needs an upgrade so either of these players would be good gets for the secondary.

The team are also likely to look for pass rushing help in free agency, but some of the top possible free agents were franchise tagged. Jadeveon Clowney, Dee Ford, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Frank Clark were all tagged by their teams. That leaves players like Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler, Justin Houston, and a few others available. Any of those 3 guys would be upgrades over what the 49ers currently have on the roster. The #2 pick in the draft also allows the team to select a pass rusher if they have a player in mind. The 49ers are likely to take a pass rusher in both free agency and in the draft since they need depth at that spot.
