The 49ers did a lot in the offseason to bolster their defense heading into the new season. Drafting Nick Bosa and signing Dee Ford should improve the 49ers pass rush tremendously. But another piece that may be just as important for the defense’s improvement could be Richard Sherman and his ability to get back to full health. He injured his Achilles injury in 2017 and the 49ers took a chance that he could get back to his normal form. Even though he was able to play in 14 games last season, he still dealt with a lot of injuries. He was the most consistent corner on the team, but had no interceptions. With more time to deal with his injuries, he may get closer to the Richard Sherman that the NFL is used to and with an improved pass rush, that could spell trouble for offenses.

In a set of roster moves, the 49ers added more offensive line depth. C Wesley Johnson was given a one year deal and he will be given a chance to compete for a roster spot. He played in 10 games last season with the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers starting offensive line is not completely healthy, so the team needed to have depth on the roster. 49ers TE Marcus Lucas was waived on Tuesday. He was signed to the practice squad in late December.
