San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday, May 25, 2019

With Jimmie Ward back on the wagon (off the wagon?) with a broken collarbone, the Niners are already back to the Adrian Colbert/Antone Exum Jr. combo of 2018. And while there may still be plenty of potential there with Colbert, he didn’t perform well when healthy last year, and he has a bit of an injury history of his own.

Another option might be DJ Reed who filled in at FS for a couple of games last year, but both he and the coaches seem to be more comfortable with him playing in the slot.

And so, barring a late free agent pick up, the 49ers are left with very few options at free safety. But, there is one more possibility.

Tarvarius Moore.

Now obviously this isn’t a revelation. A fairly large cross section of Niners fans have been wondering out loud for some time why Moore isn’t being given a chance to play the position he was so successful at – both in high school and in college.

And why not wonder?

Moore played exclusively at Free Safety during his senior year at Southern Miss, and per PFF was the second highest graded safety in the nation. So why was he moved to corner?

It’s not an easy question to answer. The best that I can do is play devil’s advocate. Watching some tape of his vs Florida St in 2017 there were times that Moore seemed to take bad angles – both in run support and in coverage. And he did seem slow to react at times on deep throws to the sidelines.

But honestly, that’s picking nits. And even the Florida St game which might not have been his best, was far better than anything that Adrian Colbert ever put on tape in college.

So why isn’t he being given a chance? What do you guys think?
