For the 1st time since 2012, the 49ers used their non-exclusive franchise tag on kicker Robbie Gould. Robbie was one of the first free agent signings when John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan were hired and he has been almost automatic since arriving. He made 72 out of 75 field goals since 2017. He led the NFL in field goal percentage last season. The 49ers can match any offers other teams make to Gould, but he’s not leaving because the 49ers would get two 1st round picks for losing him, which is a lot for a kicker even of Gould’s caliber.
There were rumors that Robbie would like to go back to the Chicago Bears. But the 49ers had no interest in letting one of the most reliable kickers walk. Robbie will likely make around $5 million in 2019 under the tag. The team had over $60 million in cap space. The tagging of Robbie means the 49ers will expect to be contending for a playoff spot this season. Knowing that they have a reliable kicker for at least one more season allows the team to address the other needs with the salary cap space.
