San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday May 18, 2019
In the opening monologue of the classic film “The Big Lebowski”, Sam Elliott as the narrator says:
“..sometimes there’s a man. I won’t say a hero, ‘cause what’s a hero? … But sometimes. There’s a man who, well, he’s the man for his time’n place, he fits right in there. And that’s the Dude.. “
And in the movie, that man was The Dude. But for the 49ers, in 2017, that man was C.J. Beathard.
You see, when Shanahan and Lynch took over the 49ers in early 2017, the team was in shambles, and there wasn’t a single QB on the roster. Now, they quickly signed Bobby Hoyer, but he was a journeyman. A retread. And did nothing to inspire the long suffering fan base. But then, a light.
Thanks to shrewd manuevering by Lynch and Shanahan in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft – a hero was born: C.J. Beathard.
A swashbuckling, mustachioed QB from Iowa Univerity, with the reflexes of an injured water buffalo, and arm strength comparable to your Uncle Frank throwing a wet nerf football in the above ground pool at the family BBQ, while simultaneosly balancing a bottle of Coors Light on his belly.
And just like that, the fan base was reinvigorated. Energized. We waited patiently. And then, it happened. In week 6, Beathard charged onto the field – replacing a struggling Bobby Hoyer – and lead the 49ers and new coach Kyle Shanahan… to their sixth straight loss of the season. But he didn’t stop there. Beathard then proceed to place the entire team on his back, and carry them to three straight additional defeats by a combined score of 93-30.
And yet, the fanbase remained loyal. And in week 10, we were rewarded, as CJ lead a ragtag bunch of Aldrick Robinson’s and Legar Douzables to a 31-21 victory over the 1-7 Giants, securing the first win of the Shanahan/Lynch era, and securing his own spot in 49ers lore forever.
So. Is CJ Beathard a hero? Well, I won’t say a hero, because what is a hero? But sometimes. Well, sometimes there’s a man. And in three months, when the 49ers inevitably trade or release him, I’ll always remember that there was a time in 2017 – for however brief it was – that CJ Beathard was that man.
