San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday April 27, 2019

Day two of the NFL draft began in a rather predictable fashion. With several top players still on the board to begin the round including Byron Murphy, Nasir Adderley, AJ Brown, Juan Thornhill, and Deebo Samuel, the odds were good that one of them would fall into our laps at pick 36. And sure enough one did. Lynch and Shanahan picked WR Deebo Samuel who had long been discussed here at NIners Nation as a possibility in the 2nd round.

I for one was happy with the pick. While DB was an obvious need as well, it was clear based on last years results that Shanahan was looking to improve on the WR corps, and Samuel definitely met that need. And besides, I figured surely they would use their 3rd round pick on a defensive back.

But one by one as the 2nd round unfolded the DB’s disappeared. Murphy, Ya-Sin, Mullen, Greedy, Adderley, Thornhill (my personal draft crush), Rapp, and even our fall back sleeper Sean Bunting. All gone.

So now what? Well, I’ll tell you what. Terrell Owens of all people saunters up to the podium, tells us to get our popcorn ready, and announces the pick: Jalen Hurd. WR. Baylor.

And just like that, the calm, orderly, predictable draft we’d been enjoying was turned on its side. And to be fair, the complaints were valid. Doubling up on WR when the secondary was still a position of need? Isn’t Hurd a day three guy? Or in many cases: who in the world is Jalen Hurd?

But thankfully, as time passed, and the details emerged, the pick didn’t seem quite as bad. The DB’s were gone, WR was still a position of need – especially a WR with some size – Hurd is 6’4” 220lbs – and his versatility as a former RB will certainly allow for Shanahan to use his skills in a number of ways to terrorize opposing defenses.

And so, we move on to day three. And it’s safe to say that the WR position has been sufficiently addressed, and the 49ers can now focus on drafting for value at other positions of need.
