The 2017 draft was the first for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. San Francisco began a massive roster restructuring under the new regime, and that kicked off with the 2017 draft.

San Francisco wound up with 10 players out of that class. They needed a strong first go in the draft, and that year’s group has provided mixed results for the 49ers through two seasons.

Let’s take a look at the 49ers’ entire 2017 draft class, and how they’ve fared in their first two years:

DL Solomon Thomas, Round 1 (Pick 3)

The versatility that many draft analysts lauded in the Stanford defensive lineman hasn’t shown through in his first two years. He’s struggled when he kicks out to the edge and hasn’t been an effective pass rusher from any spot on the line. Year 2 was better than Year 1, but Thomas has not developed into an impact player. A rotational defensive lineman is fine to snag in the draft. That is not the case with the third overall pick though. He played well toward the end of the season, and the 49ers desperately need Thomas to blossom in Year 3.
