There’s no way they’d draft him. Right….Right?!?

The San Francisco 49ers are in a fascinating position for the upcoming NFL Draft. If Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray isn’t selected first overall, things become really interesting. You have to imagine John Lynch’s phone will be blowing up if that is the case. Lynch and the front office will need to decide if the trade offers are worth passing on the best position player in the draft.

But is there another option?

Danny Heifetz of The Ringer thinks that there’s another option. It’s laughable, but he makes an argument. So that is enough for me to bring it here and entertain the idea. Heifetz believes the 49ers should trade Jimmy Garoppolo and draft Murray. Whew. Heifetz asks it’s not only about whether the Niners should do this, it’s also whether they can. He cites that the cap hit would be less to trade Jimmy G than it would for the Arizona Cardinals to trade Josh Rosen.

The 49ers could get a decent pick for Garoppolo, who they got for the no. 43 overall pick in October 2017. If that pick is a good one, and the team likes Murray’s future more than Garoppolo’s, it might be enough for San Francisco to think about making a massive gamble. It may seem far-fetched now, but the NFL status quo changes quickly in April.

It’s far-fetched and borderline insane. We see the strangest things happen year in and year out. The writer cites how Murray would be cheaper and isn’t coming off of an injury. Also how Garoppolo’s contract isn’t unreasonably high.

Murray comes with a big risk himself. I’m not asking you would you pull the trigger. I’m asking if you were on the clock, would you entertain the idea and field offers? If you think that Jimmy G is a franchise QB, then it’s not even a decision. If you have questions or concerns, you probably are picking up the phone.
