There was a bit of positive injury news following the 49ers’ practice Wednesday. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh told reporters in a post-practice press conference that injured linebacker Kwon Alexander is expected to return to the field in time for training camp.

Alexander tore his ACL in late October last season while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His return to the lineup for the 2019 season opener was a significant question mark for the 49ers’ defense, but getting him on the field in camp gives at least some hope that he could be ready for Week 1.

There are still plenty of hurdles to clear between the start of training camp in late July and the team’s opener on September 8. It’s entirely conceivable that he participates throughout the preseason and doesn’t play in the regular season.

San Francisco will take any morsel of good news on the injury front since their first week of OTAs came with a variety of injury updates that saw several key players sidelined for the duration of the offseason program.

The most important thing for the 49ers will be their health when the season begins. If they have players back, or at least on the right track to return early in the year like it appears Alexander is, they’ll be in good shape to contend in 2019.
