It finally happened. The San Francisco 49ers are waiving kicker Jake Moody, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, marking the end of his career in the Bay Area after two-plus seasons with the team.
Moody, 25, had his struggles continue into Week 1 on Sunday, missing a 27-yard field goal before having a 36-yard field goal blocked, going 1-3 on the afternoon. That came after a preseason where Moody was 5/6 on field goals and 5/6 on extra points.
Since entering the league, the former Michigan kicker has been disappointing. He was 21-for-25 as a rookie, which still ranked in the bottom half of the league before going an abysmal 14-for-24 in Year 2. Drafted in the third round for his booming leg, Moody especially struggled from 40 yards and beyond, going 16-for-29 in that range for his career.
The 49ers had brought in Greg Zuerlein earlier this offseason to compete with Moody, but released the veteran before the preseason because of roster needs at other positions. Now, after a rough Week 1 that nearly cost the 49ers the game, Moody has been waived, and the 49ers will look for another solution.
Being drafted No. 99 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Moody was the highest-selected kicker since Roberto Aguayo was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He’ll go down as another big draft miss by the 49ers in that class, as they also took tight end Cameron Latu in that draft.
