The 49ers took a huge hit on Thursday with Jimmie Ward going down with a broken clavicle. He’ll be ready for training camp.

San Francisco 49ers free safety Jimmie Ward went down with a broken collarbone, Thursday but he should be back by training camp.

The 49ers oft-injured safety went down Thursday while diving for a ball and almost immediately reports surfaced that it was his collarbone. Per Ian Rapoport, Ward will go into surgery on Friday and should be out 8-12 weeks.

And so, Ward’s time for OTAs comes to an end. Given the timeline, that should get him into training camp. At the very worst he should suit up in the tail-end of it. Both of those options give Ward the chance to do what he’s never done his entire NFL career: Start a full 16-game season. He’s also managed to play in 16 games (not starting) once his entire NFL career.

Ward was brought back on a one-year $4.5 million deal. Ward has always had the ability—no one has argued that—but he cannot fight off the injury bug that has been afflicting him his entire career. Hopefully this is the only injury for 2019 and a final send off of his woes.

We’ll see him at training camp. And see if he can make it through that.
