Shanahan would not rule Jimmy G out against the Cardinals
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion Sunday and will be re-evaluated Wednesday. However, Shanahan wouldn’t rule out Garoppoloo for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, which is great news for Jimmy.
Garoppolo came out of Sunday sore, and the hope is that if it’s improved, he could be able to play against Arizona by Wednesday. Jimmy is day-to-day. I wonder if a part of this is making the Cardinals prepare for two quarterbacks — though I’d prepare for Lance if I were the Cardinals.
Left tackle Trent Williams is day-to-day with a shoulder injury. The same goes for George Kittle (calf injury) and Javon Kinlaw (calf injury). Samson Ebukam has hamstring soreness, as is also day-to-day. Shanahan seemed more optimistic that this group would return to practice on Wednesday and play next Sunday.
There was good news on the injury front for running backs as Shanahan said Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) should be able to practice Wednesday without a blue non-contact jersey. Mitchell, as with everyone else listed, will be evaluated at Wednesday’s practice.
Shanahan said it was “Definitely better news today than the feeling we had last night.” That’s a massive sigh of relief knowing your quarterback and left tackle won’t miss extended action.
Shanahan said the 49ers don’t “have to” make a change at kick returner — despite making one in the game — after Trenton Cannon had a “really bad” fumble. Shanahan said the team needs more competition at the returner spot. Deebo Samuel took Cannon’s place. Perhaps Mitchell or Ambry Thomas will return kicks.
Kicker Robbie Gould has a strained groin. He’s going to miss some time. The 49ers will bring in a new kicker this week. If San Francisco has to place Gould on the injured reserve, Gould must miss three games and not just weeks. Shanahan said Gould’s injury could be anywhere from 3-5 weeks. The team has not yet decided whether to place Gould on IR.
The past two seasons, the 49ers brought in kickers Chase McLaughlin and Tristan Vizcaino when Robbie Gould was injured. Neither is an option this time. McLaughlin is with the Browns. Vizcaino is with the Chargers.
All in all, the 49ers made it out of Sunday pretty well, considering. We’ll see who practices Wednesday and receive more updates from Shanahan in a couple of days.
