That big number is over and done with. Garoppolo is now in the “back” half of the league in numbers.

Jameis Winston will make more money than Jimmy Garoppolo in 2019.

Shortly after the close of the 2017 season, the San Francisco 49ers locked quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo up to a long term extension worth $137.5 million. At the time, the deal set records for some guaranteed money and yearly salary only to be broken a few months later by Kirk Cousins (guarantees) and later Matt Ryan (just about anything involving money). Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have followed along and now, Garoppolo’s contract looks like a masterpiece of Paraag Marathe negotiating.

The big hit was 2018. Last year, Garoppolo’s $37 million salary cap hit was first among quarterbacks and it wasn’t even close, he was $10.5 million ahead of Matthew Stafford who was ranked second.

Garoppolo’s 2019 cap-hit isn’t near as severe. Per Over the Cap, Garoppolo’s salary for 2019 is $19.3 million, 16th among quarterbacks. Alex Smith, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota will all make more money.

The drop-off behind him isn’t near as steep. Joe Flacco is right behind him at 17th with $18.5 million. Things continue to trickle from there. A far cry from a $10.5 million difference.

Garoppolo’s cap hits will hover around $26.5 million the final three years of his five-year deal.

Another thing to consider is the dead money won’t be near as bad by 2020 if he channels his inner Brock Osweiler. The 49ers had the money to make this deal, but they managed the numbers quite effectively in case something goes wrong.

But this is Jimmy G, so who’s worrying about that?
