Life without Joe Staley is a harsh reality hurtling toward the 49ers. The six-time Pro Bowler turns 35 before the start of the 2019 regular season as he enters his 13th season. While the prospect of replacing the potential Hall of Famer is a formidable one, it’s one the left tackle hopes the team won’t have to address any time soon.

“But I’ve made it very clear to everybody that I want to play as long as I can,” Staley told reporters Wednesday at the team’s facility according to Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee. “I still love the game, still feel like I can play at a high level. Still feel like I’m valued on the football team. I know it’s my last year under contract, but I’m not worried about that. I’m just going to go out there and try and do everything I can to help us win games with this team.”

There are no reports about a contract beyond this season. The 13-year veteran is due to hit free agency next March.

Staley told reporters he considered retiring after a dismal 2016 season, but a revamped 49ers team has him in a more positive place in football.

“I just love being around everybody,” Staley said. “I don’t know – I’d much rather be here than somewhere else.

It sounded when Staley announced he’d play in 2019 that it could be his final season. It still might be. If he sees a significant decline in play this year, or finds his body endures more punishment than he’s capable of withstanding, he could hang up his pads after Year 13. It would be difficult to blame him.

However, it’s easy to envision him returning after 2019 given his excitement to return to Santa Clara for the start of the offseason program, and his more optimistic tone regarding future seasons.

The 49ers will have to try and find a replacement for Staley soon regardless. The longer they can put off that chore though, the better.
