Sounds like the all-everything left tackle has no plans of hanging it up

San Francisco 49ers Hall of Famer to be Joe Staley was available for reporters Wednesday. Staley is always a fun interview. Staley opened up the interview saying that he is a huge Tottenham fan of the Champions league and was almost out of breath after watching the game. Staley said he follows soccer a lot and he was starstruck. I love when athletes open up about their other hobbies.

Staley is such a laid back, open guy. He was giving George Kittle and Mike McGlinchey a hard time. Apparently Mcglinchey chose to workout at EXOS instead of with Staley. Staley said something along the lines of “yeah, he’s more of the glitz and glamour type. He’s into the spotlight life.” Staley also mentioned that there were some younger players down at EXOS training facility like Taylor Lewan and Quenton Nelson that are friends with McGlinchey. “He just felt like he can learn some things from them, as opposed to me. I have a long ways to go before I catch up to those guys, apparently.” Hilarious.

Staley was also adamant that he is leaps and bounds better at yoga than McGlinchey.

How much longer will Staley be around?

It was only a matter of time before the questions turned from light-hearted to how much longer Staley will play. Staley said he made it very clear to management that he wants to play as long as he can.

I still love the game. Still feel like I can play at a high level. Still feel like I’m valued on the football team. I know this is my last year under contract. I’m not worried about that. I just want to go out there and do everything i can to help us win football games.

He mentioned that he loves the structure and that’s why he’s at the voluntary portion of workouts. He also enjoys being around the guys.

The final takeaway was the message that head coach Kyle Shanahan is sending.

I think that was a message last year. The first year it was “figure out who is on the roster, and who we need to replace.” Last year we had really high expectations. Obviously, the season didn’t go anyway we wanted it to. Year three is the big make or break year for everyone. it’s time to produce, and we all know that.
