We’ll see….

The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to trade kicker Robbie Gould, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Gould received the franchise tag on Feb. 26, and not much good has happened since then. ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided more details on Wednesday:

“The 36-year-old Gould indicated that he has gotten tired of 14 months of contract negotiations and wants to be closer to his wife and children in Chicago. After 11 years with the Bears, Gould was released. He spent 2016 with the New York Giants before signing a two-year deal with the Niners. Gould’s wife and three boys under age five stayed in Chicago.”

I won’t blame anyone for wanting to be closer to your family. I’m sure it’s rubbing some people the wrong way to try and bully your way to play for a team you want to. I would imagine this would be a much bigger story if Gould played a different position.

There’s no denying what Gould can do on the field. He’s as automatic as it gets, having made 72 of his 75 kicks over the last two years. Still, I imagine John Lynch—especially with only having six picks—will see the type of compensation he can get for Gould.
