The 49ers coach is excited to work with Jimmy G

MJ Acosta of NFL Network sat down Friday morning with the San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. The topic of discussion was QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Let’s watch the interview first:

Now let’s dissect it.

“Jimmy needs to play”

I thought it was telling how honest Shanahan was throughout this interview. He was very complimentary of Garroppolo’s play, but acknowledged that there would be growing pains. It sounded like the plan was to go through those rough patches year one together—to figure out everything he can and can’t do—then devise a plan in year two to mold the perfect offense around him. See: Ryan, Matt.

Shanahan also acknowledged how a benefit is that Jimmy can be be in the building with everyone else while he’s rehabbing. So the coach can look out of his window and see how everything is going. Shanahan said that he’s doing well and he can do drop backs and throw, and you’d think he could play now based on how everything is going. He was cautious, though. Shanahan knows everyone says “he’s ahead of schedule.”

If anything, this gives us an update of where the quarterback that needs to play is at in his rehab. They’re going to take it slow with him, and they should. One thing that is apparent from watching that video is Shanahan’s excitement to work with Garoppolo in 2019.
