Sunday will be a battle of the backups.

We wondered whether Brock Purdy would start for the San Francisco 49ers Sunday and head coach Kyle Shanahan provided the answer on Wednesday afternoon. Purdy is out, and Sam Darnold is in.

This comes on the heels of the Los Angeles Rams announcing that starting quarterback Matthew Stafford will rest in Week 18 in favor of Carson Wentz.

Shanahan said, “Brock’s the only guy for sure I don’t plan on playing.” That’s not counting Christian McCaffrey, of course.

The next question is how long will the first team offense, and defense, stay on the field in a meaningless game. Shanahan made it sound like practice will still be the same and that he’s never been a fan of resting players, so it’ll likely be a situation that the team plays by ear.

As far as the injury report goes, we have three new players. Guard Jon Feliciano is listed with a back injury. Safety Tashaun Gipson is listed with a quad injury. And running back Elijah Mitchell will miss Wednesday’s practice due to an illness.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings is still taking steps to clear the concussion protocol. He’ll be limited on Wednesday, which is a sign that he’s taking positive strides.
