No need to overreact, but you will anyways!

Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media after the San Francisco 49ers took the field for their second organized team activity this week. They’ll have the day off tomorrow, before returning Thursday for one final OTA of the week.

The biggest news of the day was first-round pick Nick Bosa. He clutched his right hamstring after a 1-on-1 drill and did not return for the rest of the practice. Shanahan confirmed it was a hamstring injury, but did not know the severity of the injury. There’s a good chance Bosa doesn’t practice Thursday.

In positive news, Jimmy Garoppolo looked spry in the videos recorded by the media. Garoppolo had his brace on.

Garoppolo participated in everything but team drills on today, even 7-on-7. That’s a good sign.

Injury bug

RB Matt Breida – Slight pectoral tear

LB Fred Warner – Knee scope

RB Jerick McKinnon – ACL recovery

TE Garrett Celek – Concussion protocol

RB Raheem Mostert – Forearm setback

Those are the players that will not be participating during OTAs. We’ll see them return during training camp. Breida injured himself lifting weights, per Shanahan.

Warner had a clean-up procedure on his knee, so they took care of it early. Neither of those injuries sounded like they were anything to be concerned about.

Celek is still in the concussion protocol from the regular season, which is a bit odd. Is this just a chance to get the younger guys more reps? Time will tell. He will not be cleared until training camp, though. The 49ers can gain over $2 million in cap savings if Celek is cut.

Obersvations

This will be a big couple of weeks for Ahkello Witherspoon. Consistency is key with him. The talent is there, but he needs to put it all together.

I’d pay good money to see Ford go 1-on-1 with Joe Staley. It’s good to hear McGlinchey talk about Ford brings more to the table than just speed off the edge.

The clip above is the first-team offense. Feel free to overreact to the starters!
